Job Description Development Engineer


Crabtree of Gateshead Limited are an OEM in the Print Packaging industrial sector specialising in large format sheet fed Lithographic Printing Machinery.

We have a worldwide customer base, and a significant historical pedigree that can be drawn over 130 years.

Crabtree is now underlining it’s commitment to the future, and along with other key investments and operational changes the company is formulating a dedicated development strategy for short, medium and long term projects to further strengthen the product portfolio.

There exists an opportunity for the above position within the Development Department.

Reporting to the Product Development and Improvement Director you will be part of a small team dedicated to planned improvement of existing machinery, and the design, development of new machinery.

Duties will include:

Capital Machine Development
o Technical support to Engineering, Service and Sales in problem solving projects.
o Research into the chemical, interfacial, rheological, mechanical and electronic processes utilised by the machine.
o Benchmarking through the simulation, experimental and test evaluation of existing machine processes and behavior;
o Identification and implementation of design improvements;

Capital Machine Design
o Benchmarking current machinery and formulating product project definitions and specifications
o Concept design of mechanical and electro mechanical assemblies and systems.
o Virtual evaluation and optimization of these designs from a structural, kinematic and manufacturing perspective.
o Detail drawing, to prototype and production implementation.
o Ensuring, maintaining a good fit between design and operational manufacturing objectives and investments/initiatives.
Experience Required The most important aspects are the personal qualities of intellect, commitment, energy and initiative but also attention to detail. As such we are open to applications from experienced engineers and also to recent graduates.

Relevant experience would be in a capital or special purpose machine design background.
Qualifications The successful applicants will be expected to have the following skills/qualifications:

· Degree in mechanical engineering.
· Experience of 3D modeling environments, most appropriately SolidWorks.
· Structural and motion simulation.
· Experimental and test approaches, force, stress, displacement, motion, process transients such impulse, vibration, thermal etc.
· Experience and knowledge of a wide range of manufacturing approaches, and design/tolerances for assured assembly and operational capability.
· Electro-mechanical systems and assemblies.
· Pneumatic systems.
Salary Range competitive salery depending on experience
