Apple are slightly late to Augmented Reality, we have been using AR on Apple and Android devices since 2012

With the release of the IPhone X, Apple are pushing the notion of Augmented Reality (AR) to the masses. For users of SOLIDWORKS, however, this is nothing new. Since its release in 2012 to both the Apple and Android app stores, EDrawings Professional has been allowing its users to experience their CAD-created models in augmented reality.

Not only did SOLIDWORKS beat Apple in creating applications in AR in 2012, they had also beaten the price of the competitor. The top-level IPhone X will cost a momentous £1,149, whereas EDrawings Professional costs only £1.99 and will work on your current device (£7.99 on the Android Store).

If it seems too good to be true, do watch the following video of EDrawings in action back in 2013.

Augmented Reality (AR) allows mobile users to view their SOLIDWORKS parts of assemblies in a 1:1, enabling them to view their designs as if they were truly there in the surrounding environment. The use of a mobile device is a great way to convey complex design information easily in the palm of your hand, without even requiring a copy of SOLIDWORKS on the device.

Once installed, the application comes pre-loaded with some SOLIDWORKS models which can be viewed straight away, however your own can be easily imported through e-mail or via the cloud.
