“Foreshortening” drawing dimensions other than radii

Thursday June 12, 2014 at 5:49pm
Ever wondered how to “foreshorten” a dimension in a drawing?

Ever wondered how to “foreshorten” a dimension in a drawing like this…?

The “foreshorten” option itself is quite specific as it only works for a radius dimension when you’re looking square-on at a detailed view of a circular object!

However if you’ve created a detailed or crop view say, applying other types of dimension afterwards can be tricky as often you may want to measure to entities outside the boundary edges for things other than radii..

But fear not! There is a really neat way to “crop” a dimension so that it only appears on a small section of a view in a similar fashion to using the “foreshorten” option for radii.   Here is the secret!

After a dimension has been applied, right-click the extension line (the bit that joins the dimension to the model) and choose “hide extension line.” Once done, right-click the dimension line itself and “hide dimension line”  ....

Boom! That’s it! Easy when you know how.
