In recent years most browsers have added native support for Scaleable Vector Graphics (SVG) files. As the name implies these scale images up and down without losing quality, however did you know they can also be made interactive using SOLIDWORKS Composer   In this case I have chosen to create a series of instructions either for the shop floor or end user where they can click through each step at their own pace. These are supported by most modern browsers * without the need to download add....

Sometimes we would like items to be listed as an assembly on a BOM rather than listing all the parts needed to build a certain Assembly. This can be achieved in SOLIDWORKS Composer in a couple of ways.   1. Activate Assembly Selection Mode.    2. Pick all of the assemblies you wish to list as a single item, either in the graphics area or assembly tree.     3. Activate the BOM Workshop. Verify the settings are “Apply to Selection” and “Compare Pr....

Ever struggled to show rotation and translation of actors in SOLIDWORKS Composer? If so then read on! For threaded components like screws, these cannot just be pulled out from their fixing, a rotation needs to be applied as well to give an accurate representation of the movement. However, when attempting this in Composer, there are a few things to be aware of...   Firstly this could either be shown as a movement between views (in view mode) or set up in an animation, and so deci....

Decals applied in SOLIDWORKS cannot translate through to SOLIDWORKS Composer files, however, there is a way in which you can bring through an appearance applied in SOLIDWORKS through to your translated smg file.   In SOLIDWORKS apply an appearance in the usual way to a face, body, feature etc, this can be any supported image format for example jpg, png, bmp, or even one of the standard SOLIDWORKS appearance files (p2m format) as long as it is not textured. Once applied save the file as a ....

SOLIDWORKS Composer is the new name for 3DVia Composer and the name change brings about some great enhancements to the licensing and activation procedure to bring it in line with the core SOLIDWORKS products.   LICENSE AND ACTIVATION CHANGES SNL (Floating Licenses) can be combined with the SOLIDWORKS SNL Manager so long as the program is installed as 2013 SP2 or later. To add a Composer serial key to the current SNL, modify the installation through the Control Panel > Programs and Fea....

Image content is the key deliverable in 3DVIA Composer, the views you set up of your projects need to remain consistent whilst properties of the actors can often change dramatically. View creation is obviously very easy in 3DVIA and makes your Technical Communications easy to create and manage but sometimes when you have your view set up, some changes to the actors (both geometry and collaboration) require zooming in/out, rotating and then any of the selection processes. Users can then find it d....

Over the last year or so I have been asked more and more about "apps" for viewing SOLIDWORKS files. Now, there are many options available. There are two which I would recommend looking at. The first one, is a partner product of SOLIDWORKS, called CADFASTER. It doesnt make your machine run any quicker unfortunately but does allow you to show off your designs on your ipad (not your iphone though). The app itself is free and you have 100mb of space on "the cloud" where you can....
