Challenge

The ocean’s harsh weather and constant movement make pipeline breaks a constant concern that can cost offshore oil operations up to $1 million per day  in lost revenues. Wellstream required SOLIDWORKS to design customised pipelines flexible enough to roll with waves and currents, yet strong enough to contain thousands of gallons of oil and gas, pumped at high pressures.

"Sub-sea oil and gas flow lines must be reliable and they must last a long time. Designs have to be robust, the fit between elements must be perfect and every component has to satisfy stress and fatigue requirements. We use SOLIDWORKS software to create designs and SOLIDWORKS Simulation to perform stress assessments. I create a 3D model, apply loads to determine stresses and use Simulation to perform analysis on specific components. Its very quick to build the models, run the tests and figure out the behaviour of the assembly in more detail."
