Uplec Industries Ltd. has been in Telecoms Engineering for over 40 years. We have a portfolio of successful products serving the Telecoms, Transport, Security, Datacentre and Power Generation Sectors. This role will initially assist in the development and expansion of our new optical networking product portfolio. The candidate will get broad experience across the business and become a key member of the Engineering Team.
Job Description –Mechanical Engineer (Design) Level 1
This role is suitable for someone with a minimum of 1 year’s industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering. Full training will be provided and opportunities exist for further academic study to support ongoing professional development.
As part of the engineering team, you will work across several business processes;
Within Research and Development you will expand your experience in telecoms technologies and contribute to the successful progression of new products and services.
Within Prototyping you will assist in the design and assembly of pre-production prototypes using CNC machinery and 3D Printing technologies.
Within Production you will assist in generating assembly methods and documentation for in-house and sub-contract manufacture.
Within Test you will aid in the development of routine test and fault finding procedures and documentation.
Within Marketing you will assist in collation, creation and validation of product information for our product portfolio. You will also be expected to attend exhibitions and contribute at technical conferences where required.
You will be expected to follow a route towards Chartered Engineer through either IMechE or IET. Thus, a BEng/BSc (hons) or equivalent is a pre-requisite for this job.
Skills/Qualifications/Attributes:
- This is a complex role requiring the learned capabilities and skills outlined below.
- BEng/BSc (hons) or equivalent in a STEM subject preferably (2:1 minimum) in Mechanical, Telecoms, Electronics, Engineering or Design.
- Competent in CAD; able to create parts, assemblies and drawings with annotation and dimensions in either Solidworks or Fusion 360 or Inventor. (Required, you will be assessed)
- Some experience in generating milling toolpaths in CAM software (desirable)
- Experience for FDM and SLA 3D printing, including slicing. (required)
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, injection moulding, metal finishing (electrochemical, paint).
- Knowledge of Electrical and Electronic basics including safety and component identification.
- Able to demonstrate safe use of basic workshop tools.

- Office packages (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Visio)
- Design (Photoshop, Illustrator)
- CAD (Solidworks/Inventor/Fusion360)
IT Skills Beneficial:
