We are HJC Design, an award-winning product and industrial design studio, working from concept to manufacture for clients in transport, health, sport, industrial and consumer markets. 17 years of experience feeds our process and approach, which digs deep into problem-solving and really understanding the user experience. We are looking for an exceptional Middle Weight to Senior Industrial Designer to join our intimate and fast paced consultancy in Sheffield. The ideal candidate should have experience of working as part of a team and independently, to develop exciting and inspirational new products.


You would ideally have a minimum of 4 years’ experience, an excellent knowledge of SOLIDWORKS, Adobe suite. Further knowledge of GD&T, mechanical engineering, principles, and practices is desirable.

Your Experience / Skills
    Responsibilities
  • Lead conceptual design phase for new projects

  • Engineer sketch concepts and visuals into manufactured solutions to maintain design intent

  • Design innovative and exciting new products and drive them through to manufacture

  • Liaise one to one with clients throughout the development process to build relationships

  • Guide and provide creative direction to the design team & lead decisions

  • Develop disciplined project proposals, schedules, and budgets

  • Creation of detailed product design specifications

  • Flexibility to work and manage a range of projects concurrently

  • Mentor juniors to develop new talent

  • Support the Team to deliver exceptional design

  • Generate sales and pitches for new business with confidence

  • Liaise with tool makers and suppliers to offer production engineering solutions

  • International & UK travel occasionally where necessary, to visit clients and suppliers

  • Preparation and management of design data including 3D CAD models, Assembly drawings, Bills-of-Materials, Parts drawings to BS 8888 and related documentation

  • Rational problem solving of design and manufacturing hurdles

  • The successful candidate will have full responsibility for the projects they manage and be expected to deliver new and exciting products on time, to specification and to budget

Qualification:

Specific skills

BSc/BA/MSc degree level in a Product/Industrial Design related discipline from an accredited institution
Competent knowledge of mechanical design principals and material selection
Minimum 4 years’ experience within a design consultancy or within a fast-paced in-house design/engineering environment
Adobe Suite – ID, AI, PS
Proven SOLIDWORKS skills – surfacing, large assembly, sheet metal, drawings, templates, and tables
Sub-D and NURBS Surface modelling experience
Excellent sketching skills to communicate concepts quickly
Drawing, geometric dimensioning, tolerancing and part inspection is desirable
Strong knowledge of injection moulding and other key volume manufacturing processes and their limitations, such as: blow moulding, metal fabrication, pressing, casting, extrusion, subtractive manufacturing
KeyShot or relevant rendering software experience
MS Project experience
ISO 9001 quality procedures: implementation and experience is desirable
A proven track record of taking products from concept through to manufacture
Good presentation and communication skills (written and verbal proposals and reports)

Salary Range:
Negotiable depending on experience
