What is Metal Fatigue Analysis?

Seamlessly integrated with SOLIDWORKS CAD, SOLIDWORKS Simulation offers metal fatigue analysis which can be ran as part of the design process, resulting in fewer costly prototypes, reduced rework and delays and greater time and cost efficiency.

Overview
Making use of the Stress Life Method, SOLIDWORKS Simulation and metal fatigue analysis enable high cycle fatigue prediction for metallic components which experience variable amplitude loading (Rainflow counting) or constant amplitude loading (Cumulative Damage Theory-Miners Rule).
The results can then be used for product validation in order to:
  • Adjust designs according to results feedback to ensure they meet the required product life
  • Establish recommended maintenance schedules including part replacement
  • Minimise failures, reduce warranty costs and maximise product life expectancy
The fatigue analysis results are shown in terms of:
  • Life plot: displays the number of cycles (for constant amplitude event studies) or the number of blocks (for variable amplitude studies) that cause fatigue failure at each location
  • Damage plot: demonstrates percentage of the life of the structure consumed by the defined fatigue events
  • Factor of Safety (FoS) plot: shows the load Factor of Safety for failure fatigue at each location
  • Biaxility indicator: plots the ratio of the smaller alternating principal stress, whilst ignoring the alternating principal stress closest to zero, divided by the larger alternating principal stress
  • Matrix charts: for variable amplitude studies
