In an assembly, it can be quite useful to have different parts shown in different colours. Whether that be to differentiate between parts, to display final colour or to indicate whether a part has been purchased or not. This is easy in an assembly, but when you come to a drawing, the Hidden Lines Visible (HLV) and Hidden Lines Removed (HLR) display modes remove this colour, showing all the lines in black. You can modify this behaviour by going to;

Moving sketches while in edit sketch mode is not always the easiest of things to do, particularly if your sketch is under defined. You can use the move entities command, but this doesn't always snap to your desired location. However there is another method, if you can remember the clicks;

Preparing SOLIDWORKS Models for 3D Printing
Thursday April 23, 2015 at 12:55pm

3D printing is a topic that’s in the forefront every designer and engineers mind nowadays. The ever increasing array of technologies and cost effective solutions available on the market, mean that the option to use prototyping equipment to prove a design is more readily available to us than ever before. So once we`ve used SOLIDWORKS to finalise those last design details, how do we successfully make the transition from SOLIDWORKS to a 3D printed model?

PhotoView 360 Render Region
Tuesday March 31, 2015 at 11:05am

In PhotoView 360, you can define a region of the SOLIDWORKS graphics area for rendering. Using this render region, you can limit the rendering in the integrated preview, the preview window, or the final rendering to the area of the render region. This lets you rapidly preview or create a final rendering of a subset of the scene so you can assess the impact of changes to the rendering settings, lighting, and appearances of this section of the model.

Wednesday March 18, 2015 at 10:03am

Creating new or modifying existing toolbox parts is a very common activity in SOLIDWORKS, however until recently I have never used the toolbox application to do this. Previously I have created my new custom toolbox parts from within SOLIDWORKS by simply adding a configuration. The toolbox application makes this process much quicker and is more conveniently organised so you can stay on top of your components.

Up To Reference
Thursday February 19, 2015 at 10:17am

“Up to Reference” is a new option in the linear pattern feature that allows you to create intelligent patterns. The “Up to Reference” option allows you to select an edge, vertex or face as a reference to control how many instances will be created at a fixed spacing. An offset from that reference is also available to maintain proper spacing from the end reference. If the location of the reference is moved, the number of instances is recalculated.
