Welded Structure Fabrication

SOLIDWORKS Weldments

SOLIDWORKS Weldments provide a powerful, sketch-driven environment to design frames, bases, and structural skeletons.

Rather than creating individual parts for every beam, it allows you to design the entire structure as a single multibody part, significantly speeding up the modelling and documentation of complex assemblies used across UK manufacturing and construction.

Key Capabilities

Sketch-Driven Design

Define your framework using 2D and 3D sketches; structural profiles are then applied automatically to the sketch segments.

UK & International Profile Library

Access a comprehensive library of standard British sections (BSI), alongside ISO and ANSI profiles, or create your own bespoke cross-sections.

Automatic Corner Management

Sophisticated trimming and mitring tools automatically clean up intersections where structural members meet, ensuring a professional finish.

Standard Structural Details

Rapidly add functional elements such as gussets, end caps, and stiffening plates without the need for manual modelling.

Weld Bead Visualisation

Incorporate 3D weld beads and symbols to communicate assembly requirements and accurately calculate total weld lengths and volumes.

Automated Cut Lists

Generate manufacturing-ready cut lists that automatically group identical items and specify exact lengths, angles, and quantities for the shop floor.

Stop wasting time on manual frame detailing

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create my own custom structural profiles?

Yes. You can sketch any shape, save it as a Library Feature Part, and add it to your Weldment database. This is ideal for bespoke aluminium extrusions or specific timber sections.

How is a Cut List different from a standard Bill of Materials (BOM)?

While a BOM lists individual components, a Weldment Cut List automatically identifies identical structural members and provides specific manufacturing data, such as cut lengths and mitre angles.

What happens to the Cut List if I change the frame size?

The Cut List is fully associative. As soon as you modify the driving sketch or profile, the Cut List updates instantly to reflect the new lengths and quantities.

Can I use Weldments for modular aluminium systems?

Absolutely. While called "Weldments", the tool is perfect for any extrusion-based design, including modular systems like Bosch Rexroth, 80/20, or even PVC piping and timber frames.

Does it handle complex corner treatments?

Yes. The Trim/Extend tool allows you to choose between mitred corners, butt joints, or specialised gaps to allow for weld penetration.
