Course Overview

The Mould tool design commands inside SOLIDWORKS allow you to quickly generate the core and cavity models directly from your SOLIDWORKS part file.

In addition, you will learn how to check the draft angles, where to position the parting lines in your design to generate viable tooling, and then account for any remaining undercuts (using both side actions and lifters) and create ejector pins. The course also looks at techniques for dealing with imported data (typically encountered in mould design).

NOTE: This course is available as part of the Silver, Gold & Platinum Training Passports.

What You'll Learn

Course Agenda

Lesson 1: Surface Concepts and Imported Geometry

The first lesson of this course helps the user understand the relationship between surface and solid models. The user will be taught how to import solid and surface geometry from other sources as well as how to diagnose and repair problems that may occur using the import diagnostics tool.

Lesson 2: Core and Cavity

In lesson 2 the user will learn how to build core and cavity mould tooling for an existing part and analyse a model to check for proper draft. The user will also be taught how to scale a model to allow for shrinkage and how to determine parting line edges and build parting surfaces. Finally the user will be introduced to shut-off surfaces and tooling split and learn how to create an assembly from a multi-body part.

Lesson 3: Side Cores and Pins

Upon successful completion of lesson 3, the user will understand how to utilize thickness and undercut analysis, as well as use the core command to create additional tooling. The user will learn how to manually select both parting line edges and shut-off surface edges.

Lesson 4: Advanced Parting Line Options

Lesson 4 introduces the user to advanced parting line options, they will use the parting line command to split straddle faces and solid bodies as well as using the split entities option within the command.

Lesson 5: Creating Custom Surfaces for Mould Design

In lesson 5 the user will learn how to manually create interlock surfaces, organise custom surfaces into mould folders and use parting surface manual mode. The user will also be taught how to use surface modelling features to modify the parting surface and how to create and organise custom shut-off surfaces.

Lesson 6: Advanced Surfacing for Mould Design

In lesson 6 the user will learn how to use surface features to create custom parting lines and side cores.

Lesson 7: Alternative Methods for Mould Design

Lesson 7 introduces the user to alternative methods for creating mould tooling. They will learn various techniques to generate the mould tooling from existing surfaces, and how to use the combine and cavity commands.

Lesson 8: Reusable Data

In lesson 8 the user will be taught how to create, modify and insert library features as well as create Smart components and locate parts and assemblies in 3D Content Central.
